Upgrading a WordPress website to click-and-collect, quickly and simply

The current lockdown, and the store closures that come with it during the Covid crisis, have hit retailers and local shops hard. Since Monday, 11 January 2021, so-called “Click & Collect” has been allowed in Bavaria. Customers can place orders online and then pick them up in store at an agreed time. That lets retailers offer their available range online – without the hassle of logistics and shipping.

Now's the time for fast, uncomplicated software solutions

Until now, many retailers have shied away from the idea of an online shop, because digitalisation projects like this often come with a hefty investment of time and money. The great thing about “Click & Collect” is that it does away with the most complex part of running an online shop – shipping. On top of that, a “Click & Collect” shop generally needs fewer features, since it's mainly about making existing products available to existing customers.

The solution: simply extend your existing WordPress website!

The good news: an existing WordPress website can become a full shop system in as little as half a day, using the free “WooCommerce” plugin, to handle “Click & Collect” orders. Instead of shipping options, you can simply offer in-store collection. The “Germanized” extension also takes care of everything needed to sell within Germany – VAT details, base prices, data management and button labelling, for example. Common payment methods (credit card, PayPal, invoice, advance payment, and so on) can also be connected via suitable extensions. Inventory management and point-of-sale systems often offer pre-configured interfaces to “WooCommerce” too – it's worth asking your provider.

Our tip: templates for legal matters (terms and conditions, privacy policy and legal notice, for example) are often provided free by chambers of commerce and trade associations.

Ready for Click & Collect?

Once the shop system is set up, you can add your products or offers. If your online range is mainly aimed at existing customers, you can skip the elaborate product photography and descriptions – even a simple list view will do. But more detailed product data can be maintained easily in the system too.
