What's changing with the new versions

The changes and updates in the new PHP version are mainly aimed at improving website security and performance. In short: your website gets faster and safer. That said, WordPress isn't yet compatible with PHP 8–8.1, so an update will have to wait. You can find the latest information on this on the official WordPress site.

Quick reminder: what's PHP actually for?

PHP is a server-side, open-source scripting language. Most of WordPress's software is written in PHP, which is why running an up-to-date PHP version matters – it's what keeps your website running smoothly.

Tip:

Most hosting providers now charge extra for support on older PHP versions (PHP 7.3 and below, for instance).

That's why we recommend updating to PHP 7.4.

Security and improved performance are also the two headline benefits of the new WordPress version 5.9.

The other new features are mainly of interest if your website is built on WordPress's own page builder, “Gutenberg”. Here, for example, the design tools have been improved, editing options extended, and more functions added for dynamic content; there's also a new default theme, “Twenty Twenty-Two”. The really big changes, though, will probably only come with the 6.0 update.

Should I already update to WordPress 5.9?

As long as the plugins on your website have confirmed compatibility with the new version, there's nothing stopping you updating. And the performance check certainly shows a difference:
