What business customers need to know about the German Accessibility Strengthening Act

Accessibility is a topic that often gets overlooked in the digital space, and rarely thought through to the end. That's set to change, not least with the German Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG). From June 2025, legal requirements come into force that oblige many companies to meet digital accessibility standards.

But does that apply to your company too?

What is the BFSG — and who does it affect?

The German Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) was passed to improve access to digital products and services for people with disabilities. It's based on an EU directive and applies to, among others:

  • Online shop operators
  • Booking platform providers
  • Companies offering digital self-service tools

The condition: the offering is aimed at consumers (B2C).

B2B companies aren't generally affected, as long as their offering is clearly aimed at business customers, meaning it's not designed for consumers visually, linguistically or functionally.

So does none of this matter for B2B?

Not quite.

Even where the law doesn't (yet) create an obligation for many B2B providers, one question remains:

How accessible is your communication — and how approachable is your brand?

Accessibility doesn't start with screen readers. It touches your entire website structure, your PDFs, contrast, navigation, language and usability. And it's increasingly becoming a marker of quality and trust, in a B2B context too.

What accessibility means to us at flame

At flame, we don't think of accessibility as an obligation — we think of it as part of the brief.

Whether it's a website, a catalogue or employer branding, we build accessibility into our projects as standard:

  • Contrast and colour choices based on accessibility standards
  • Clear structure and user-friendly operation
  • Alt text and clear navigation paths
  • Low-barrier, accessible PDFs

And if you'd like to know where you currently stand, we offer:

An accessibility check of your website or communication materials

A workshop for your team

In short: a topic for anyone paying attention

Accessibility is more than a legal requirement — it's a signal of attitude, quality and openness.

And yes, in B2B too, it can become a competitive advantage.
